Start here: what does a fence cost?

Fence installation runs $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026, with most homeowners spending $1,800–$6,500 on a standard yard. Where you land inside that range comes down to material, height, terrain and your local labor market. Run your own numbers with the calculator, or read the full breakdown by material below.

Why do fence quotes vary so much?

Two contractors can price the same 150-foot run three-fold apart, and the spread is usually explainable. Material grade accounts for much of it — a thin big-box vinyl panel and a thick-wall professional one differ about 30% in cost and far more in how they hold up to wind. Site conditions do the rest: rocky or heavy clay soil adds 20–40% to labor, sloped ground another 15–30%, and urban labor rates run 40–60% above rural ones.

Season matters too. Booking in fall or winter often saves 5–15% versus the late-spring rush, when crews are booked out two to three weeks.

The three questions worth asking every installer

1. What post depth and spacing does the quote include? Posts are where fences fail first, usually at the soil line.
2. How will you handle the slope? Stepped versus racked panels changes both cost and appearance.
3. What is and isn't included? Permits, old-fence removal, gates and haul-away are frequently quoted separately.

How we research these numbers

Every price range on this site is compiled from multiple independent 2026 sources and cross-checked before publishing: installer datasets built on completed projects, national cost aggregators, regional contractor guides, and the building codes that affect what you're allowed to build. When sources disagree, we say so. When a figure is an estimate rather than documented pricing, we label it. More on our method is in about Home Fixs.
